Justice Mohanty to probe into Balangir violence

Bhubaneswar: The state government on Monday named Justice S K Mohanty retired judge of the Orissa High Court as the head of the judicial commission to probe into the death of two students in a mishap and the violence that followed in Balangir district.

Mohanty would submit its report to the government within three months, chief minister Naveen Patnaik told reporters here.

Earlier, the chief minister had announced compensation of Rs five lakh to each affected family and that the state would bear the medical expenses of the other students who were injured in the violence.

While one student died in a road accident at Balangir on Saturday, another injured student succumbed to his injuries at the VSS Medical College Hospital at Burla on Sunday.

More than 200 people were arrested during the Western Orissa bandh called by the student wing of Congress on Monday, police said.
